Ideal for furniture and cabinet shops, these double flute bits quickly slice through hard or soft wood, plywood and composites such as MDF or particle board. Unlike straight-flute bits, some portion of the spiral bit's cutting edge is continously in contact with the workpiece, producing smoother cutting action and smoother results. Upcut bits pull chips up and out of the kerf for faster cutting. this type of bit is ideal for high-volume shops, but the workpiece must be securely clamped in place to prevent lifting. Downcut bits don't clear chips quite as quickly as the upcut bits, but their downward-spiralling action actually helps hold the workpiece in place. The downcut bit is best for finish work, as the upcut may leave a slightly frayed edge.

The Up and Down Spiral bit spirals upward for about the first 5/8" from the tip, then it switches directions and spirals down for the remainder of its length. You adjust the cutting height so the transition point between the two spirals is roughly in the center of your stock and go to work. You'll get chip and splinter-free cuts on both sides, since both spirals are pulling back into the stock, not tearing out!
